  4.                Would you like to buy a low-mileage Porsche for less
  5.           than $14,000?  A Lincoln Continental for under $1,000? 
  6.           How about a VCR or a fax machine for $20?  Such fantastic
  7.           deals are available to savvy shoppers who know where the
  8.           best sales really take place at government auctions.
  9.                Government, you probably know, dwarfs every other
  10.           industry in the United States.  The federal government
  11.           alone has an operating budget of well over $1 trillion
  12.           per year.  (One trillion, hard as it is to comprehend, is
  13.           a 1,000 times 1 billion; 1 billion is a thousand times 1
  14.           million.)  Each state and local government handles even
  15.           more millions.  One city -- New York -- has an annual
  16.           budget of approximately $30 billion, more than the total
  17.           output of most nations.
  18.                With all that money floating around, opportunities
  19.           are bound to arise.  Governments buy things by mistake,
  20.           for example, so they have to dispose of them.  Not-so-old
  21.           supplies and equipment have to be sold to make room for
  22.           newer, more expensive models.  (Heaven help the
  23.           bureaucrat who doesn't spend his or her annual budget
  24.           allotment.)  As crime increases, so does the inventory of
  25.           seized property; the same for assets seized in lieu of
  26.           back taxes or unpaid debts.
  27.                As governments at all levels amass unwanted goods,
  28.           there's a constant need to get rid of them.  Moreover,
  29.           bureaucrats aren't merchants with a constant eye on the
  30.           bottom line.  Often there's no incentive to get top
  31.           dollar when unloading excess property.  Instead,
  32.           government employees merely want to get the stuff out of
  33.           the way as soon as possible, as easily as possible.
  34.                The merchandise is sold through government auctions. 
  35.           If you're patient and diligent, you can find
  36.           extraordinary values in these auctions.  There are two
  37.           ways to cash in on such opportunities:
  38.                *  You can buy an incredible assortment of goods at
  39.           bargain prices.  If you want, you can use those goods
  40.           yourself.
  41.                *  You can resell the goods you buy at auction,
  42.           reaping huge profits and creating a successful business
  43.           for your spare time.
